Where Europe Meets the G20
Bruegel, a leading European, Brussels based, economic-policy think tank led a seminar with UK officials and European and international economists to discuss Europe’s contribution to the London Summit.
Would actions being taken at the European level on the macro economy, financial architecture, institutional reform and competition issues complement or contradict efforts being taken globally through the G20 process? Discussants expressed strong views that it was imperative that internationally we acted on reforming financial regulation and Europe acted on the macro-economy to restore confidence in the markets.
Participants warned on the competition issues that were arising within the single market and internationally from measures taken in certain sectors of the economy. Most importantly Europe would have to play its role, a large role, in achieving the global new deal.
It was well placed to help achieve a deal on designing international institutional architecture fit for the 21st Century and to help prevent future crises.
