Essential voices at the G20
'Important though G20 nations are, representing 85% of world GDP, their voices are not enough to deal with this truly global problem,' Lord Malloch Brown said as he welcomed the participation at the G20 London Summit of the leaders of Association of South East Asian Nations, Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
Prime Minister Vejjajiva is currently chair of ASEAN.
Lord Malloch Brown said that key issues for ASEAN and Asia region are 'efforts to reverse the sudden and dramatic collapse in international trade.'
In the past months countries is the region have experience cuts of 20 - 40% on a year earlier. 'We need to both ensure that in the steps we take to revive national economies, we don’t do things that breach international trade agreements. And we need to make sure that the Doha trade round gets revived as quickly as possible.'
He said that the Summit must also deal with the mechanics of international trade, particularly trade finance and 'letters of credit' that underwrite the ability of exports to ship good overseas.
Another issue is addressing the needs of poorer countries that don't have the means to undertake a fiscal stimulus and whose exports are hit by the decline of export.
Strengthening the international financial institutions is a part of this, he said, by broadening their ownership and reform of the way they operate.
The voices of ASEAN are important and need to be a part of the conversation taking place in London on 2 April, Lord Malloch Brown said in closing: 'The goal of that conversation is to make sure we all take coordinated action of sufficient ambition to revive our global economy.' Something that has brought huge prosperity to much of the world that 'is now in jeopardy.'
