South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak. © Getty ImagesKorea’s Lee Myung-bak became president on 25 February 2008, replacing Roh Moo-Hyun who had occupied the position since 2003. He worked in the business sector, moving up the ranks of Hyundai and becoming the youngest-ever chief executive officer before entering into politics. Lee was first elected into the Korean National Assembly in 1992. He served as mayor of Seoul from 2002 to 2006.

Lee was born in Kirano, Japan, on 19 December 1941. He received a degree in business administration from Korea University in 1965. Lee is married to Kim Yoon-ok.

Newsis highlighted President Lee's arrival at Downing Street. The leaders agreed to join efforts in the fight against the global financial crisis and pledged to increase bilateral co-operation on international issues such as climate change, says Newsis.

Money Today and Segye reported that Republic of Korea's Prime Minister Han Seung-soo stressed that the Republic of Korea government will try to enforce the 'standstill' agreement on trade tariffs at today's G20 Summit. The newspaper noted that he also called for co-operation across the Republic of Korea government to implement any follow-up measures from the G20 Summit.

President Lee will renew the battle against protectionism at the G20 summit today, according to MBN.

Herald Economic says the Korean government has an opportunity to take a leap forward on the international stage. It should not let go of this chance to demonstrate its leadership in the global arena, the paper says.

Herald Economic suggests that the three main agenda items for President Lee during the G20 Summit will be playing a leadership role in the G20 Summit, asserting the importance of anti-protectionist measures and building relations with President Obama.
